Old batteries
The boat was engineered in 1939 for circumnavigation. This meant she might have to fend for herself electrically for months at a time. She had 8 8 volt batteries hooked into two banks of 4 in series, also 4 12 volt batteries hooked into two banks of 2. She also had a 2KW ONAN generator (weighing I swear 500 pounds) She had an inverter and a charger off the generator, as well as a shore powered charger and two small generators connected to the main and generator engines. She had a total of 4 Master switches, each with 1/2/all/off positions. A lot of the gear showed surface rust, and the terminal blocks for the engine and main distribution panels were collapsing. Almost all of the weight involved with the electrical system was even with or aft of the engine, contributing to the vessel riding too low aft. The basic decision here is to throw it all out! |
