History: Dirigo II is a 72 foot Alden designed double top masted schooner. She was ordered in 1939 by Charles van Sicklan of Michigan, and built by the Goudy and Stevens yard in East Boothbay Maine. John Alden was tasked to designed a boat capable of circumnavigation, capable of sailing in any ocean, any weather. Completed in 1946, her second owner, Jim Crawford, circumnavigated the globe and also campaigned her in the 1953 Transpac. Kept in Puget Sound for the last 20 years, the cold salt water maintained her hull, but the constant rain and lack of care deteriorated her deck periphery. The 1997-1998 restoration included all new stanchions, chainplates, and about 20% of her planking. The mainmast is also newly hued from Douglas Fir. Dirigo II was delivered via an offshore route in 9 sailing days from Port Townsend Wa. to Long Beach by a crew of 6 June of 1998. In two separate gales she logged 180 mile days downwind. In December 2005 a substantial refit was undertaken to replace the engine, repair/replace a primary deck beam compromised by rusting strapping, and adding sisters near the foremast step. These repairs are now complete and the vessel competed for the 5th straight year in the 2006 Newport Beach-Ensenada Race. |
